There are many sources of information about palm oil, as
there are many organizations and institutions representing
various
interest groups. We encourage you
to consider all the facts and
articles written on the subject before you adopt an attitude.

As far as our position, we are a merchant promoting organic
red palm oil. What we say comes from our deep conviction
that red palm oil is beneficial to nutrition and health when
used with common sense and discipline.
Red
palm oil is more than just an everyday vegetable oil; it is
packed with nutrients that contribute to our daily energy
needs and provides a valuable source of beta-carotene and
vitamin E.
Tocopherols and tocotrienols,
which are isomers of vitamin E found
in palm oil, are powerful antioxidants and may be associated
with more favorable cholesterol levels and lower risk of
heart disease. Also, studies found out that these
antioxidants have a role in reducing the risk of some types
of cancer by attacking the free radical agents, thus
inabilitating the cancer cells to grow and multiply.

What is "palm oil"?
Palm oil is obtained from the fruit of the palm oil tree
known as Elaesis guineensis in West Africa or
Elaesis oleifera in South America. There are two kinds
of palm oil: Red Palm Oil obtained from the mesocarp,
the flesh of the fruit, and Palm Kernel Oil
obtained from the kernel. Red Palm Oil is also
referred to as Palm Oil, but so is the Palm Kernel
Oil at times, thus causing confusion. Since they are
essentially different in their physical and chemical
characteristics, their full name should be used.
Red Palm Oil
Red Palm Oil
is obtained from the
soft flesh of the palm oil fruits. In its virgin state,
this oil is semi-solid at room temperature and reddish
in color due to its high content of carotenoids.
Chemically, this oil contains naturally both saturated
and unsaturated fatty acids. A breakdown of these fatty
acids may show as below:
- Palmitic C16:0 - 44.3 %
- Stearic C18:0 - 4.6 %
- Myristic C14:0 - 1.0 %
-
Monounsaturated
total - Oleic Acid C18:1 - 38.7 %
-
Polyunsaturated
total - Linoleic Acid C18:2 - 10.5 %
Palm Kernel Oil
Obtained from the
kernel of the palm oil fruit, this oil is highly
saturated. Its color is white or yellow and it is also
semi-solid at room temperature. For Palm Kernel
Oil, the fatty acids content looks something like this:
- Lauric C12:0 - 48.2 %
- Myristic C14:0 -16.2 %
- Palmitic C16:0 - 8.4 %
- Capric C10:0 - 3.4 %
- Caprylic C8:0 - 3.3 %
- Stearic C18:0 - 2.5 %
-
Monosaturated total
- Oleic C18:1 - 15.3 %
-
Polyunsaturated
total - Linoleic C18:2 - 2.3 %
Non-RBD
RBD stands for Refined,
Bleached, Deodorized. Therefore, the non-RBD Red Palm
Oil, defines it as being non-refined, non-bleached and
non-deodorized. In other words, this oil is all virgin,
all natural and not processed through industrial
techniques. RBD oils have different characteristics
according to the type of processing involved. Usually,
RBD Palm Oil is used for cooking, cosmetic products,
etc.
Non-GMO
GMO refers to "Genetically Modified Organisms". A
genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose
genetic material has been altered using techniques known in
genetics as Recombinant DNA Technology. Recombinant DNA
Technology is the ability to combine DNA molecules from
different sources into one molecule in a test tube. For
plants/trees, non-GMO means that
these plants/trees grow in their natural habitat and posses
their natural characteristics without the influence from
humans. Thus, a non-GMO palm oil tree will produce non-GMO
fruits, only containing their natural properties and
characteristics.
Tocopherol and
Tocotrienol
It is noteworthy that red palm oil is the most abundant
source of tocotrienol and tocopherol which are isomers of
vitamin E. These natural components of red palm oil are powerful antioxidants that act to
protect cells against the effects of free radicals, which
are potentially damaging by-products of body's metabolism.
Free radicals can cause cell damage that may contribute to
the development of cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Studies are underway to determine whether vitamin E might
help prevent or delay the development of those chronic
diseases.
Cholesterol Free
Cholesterol is basically a type of fat found in animal
and diary products. Red palm oil is
cholesterol-free.
Zero Trans Fats
Red palm oil has zero trans fats. Trans fatty acids,
commonly known as "trans fats", are a type of unsaturated
fat. It can occur naturally, in small quantities, in meat
and dairy products coming from ruminants like cattle, goats,
sheep, deer, etc. However, most of the trans fats
consumed today are industrially created by a process called
partial hydrogenation of plant oils. Unlike other fats,
trans fats are neither required nor beneficial for health.
For these reasons, many health agencies and governmental
authorities recommend that consumption of trans fat be
reduced to minimal amounts or completely eliminated. Red
palm oil is a viable alternative to partly hydrogenated
oils, especially because it does not require hydrogenation
in order to prolong its shelf life. |
